Temperatures may get pretty hot during the day in the summer, 100 degrees F and higher. However, at night the desert may cool down by 30 degrees F. For most of the year, day time temperatures stay above 32 degrees F or freezing. For a month or two during winter, high temperatures may drop below freezing.
Like the plains, very little precipitation falls in the desert compared to the state's higher life zones. Even though it does not rain often, large summer thunderstorms can drop lots of rain in a little time. These can be very dangerous if you are in the semidesert canyons because they can produce dangerous flash floods. During the winter, the little snow that does fall melts within days or weeks after it falls.
